With Governor Newsom’s recent appointment of Shirley Weber to be Secretary of State, her seat in the State Assembly is up for grabs. Several Democrats have declared their intent to run for the position, but until now, no Republicans had.
That changed today, however, as Marco Contreras has announced he will run for the seat, which will be decided by a special election this summer.
“Marco is a phenomenal candidate with unlimited potential. He launched his fundraising campaign this weekend and raised over $45,000 within the first 24 hours. There is no time to waste. Marco’s community has rallied behind him and we need you on board too,” reads an email from the campaign.
Marco was born in San Diego but raised in Tijuana, Mexico due to financial struggles in his family. He eventually achieved his dream when he was able to attend high school in San Diego and play football. Contreras went on to graduate from UC San Diego and start his own business, which experienced “exponential growth.”
“I know what it’s like to be an immigrant. To start from the bottom. To build, to work, to grow, to contribute. This is the American Dream. This is why I love our country.”
Marco wants to work on healing some of the divide that was created in 2020. He knows there are issues we can all agree on like safer neighborhoods, better education, and the opportunity to thrive.
