At a time when the country is more divided than it’s ever been and millions are struggling financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, President-elect Joe Biden has announced that COVID-19 aid will be tied to race and gender. Specifically, those who are Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American, as well as women, will be given priority.
“Our priority will be Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American owned small businesses, women-owned businesses, and finally having equal access to resources needed to reopen and rebuild,” said Biden in a video posted to the official transition Twitter account.
Biden has made multiple statements calling for healing and unity among Americans. Just recently he said, “Now it is time to turn the page, to unite, to heal.”
If Biden really wants to see the country heal, why would he tie much needed COVID-19 relief to something as controversial as race or gender?
As can be seen from the quote above, Biden includes essentially every race category except for white, and he said only women will receive priority, not men.
According to the Census Bureau, 76.3% of the country is white. That means 23.7% of the population would receive higher priority than the other 76% just because of their skin color. And that does not even take into account the gender priority that Biden is planning on.
This decision by Biden, or those influencing him, is not going to help the country heal or unite. Instead, it’s going to anger struggling American’s and inflame already tense racial tensions. This is clear anti-white racism that is being promised by the future President of the United States. If Biden truly cares about working across the aisle and healing America, he ought to remove any race and gender considerations from the aid distribution process so that it will be fair for everyone.
