Former state senator and current candidate for San Diego County Supervisor District 2 Joel Anderson is leading an effort to save Proposition 13 by opposing Proposition 15 on the November ballot.
Prop 13 was passed in 1978, and limits the possible increase in property taxes on residential and commercial properties. It does so by restricting annual increases of assessed value to an inflation factor that may not exceed two percent per year.
Prop 15 would implement a $12.5 billion annual property tax increase on California’s businesses during a time when they’ve been struggling just to stay afloat. Rising property values have left us with increased revenues, but our elected officials haven’t been fiscally responsible with them. Anderson believes that we need to use the increased revenues more wisely, and keep taxes down to protect small businesses and prevent unemployment.
“Amid an unprecedented economic crisis, special interests are pushing Prop 15 on the November 2020 statewide ballot that will destroy Prop 13’s property tax protections and will be the largest property tax increase in California history,” said Anderson. “The measure will raise taxes on business property, which will ultimately get passed on to consumers in the form of increased costs on just about everything people buy and use, including groceries, fuel, utilities, day care and health care, resulting in more unemployment.”
Anderson has organized a committed coalition that is fighting to save Prop 13 and prevent Prop 15 from strangling our local businesses. “In just a short time we have had the following elected officials support this effort,” Anderson explained:

While the public opposition to more taxes remains strong—as evidenced by the overwhelming failure of bonds and tax increases throughout the state in the March election—special interest groups and power-hungry Democrats are desperate and willing to do whatever is necessary to exploit businesses and families for their hard-earned money.
