Why Allowing Non-Citizens to Vote in School Board Elections is Unlawful and Hurts Californians
The California Democrats have been pushing for illegal immigrants and unlawful residents to be able to vote in school board elections. However, this move has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the election and its impact on the district’s parents and students. The right to vote is reserved for law-abiding American citizens, and allowing illegal immigrants to participate in an election undermines the democratic process.
The California Constitution recognizes the people’s right to self-governance, which includes making laws. Article II, section 2 of the Constitution enfranchises 18-year-old US citizens and California residents.
Granting the right to vote to non-citizens brings down the legitimacy of the election overall. The right to vote is a fundamental aspect of American citizenship, and granting this right to illegal immigrants undermines this fundamental value.
While the California Constitution does not prohibit a law that enfranchises illegal immigrants, allowing illegal immigrants to vote in school board elections brings down the legitimacy of the election overall. This move would hurt both parents and everyone in the district as their voices would be ignored in favor of people who have no legal right to participate.
