The San Diego Unified board’s recent decision to vacate all its area superintendent positions and leadership roles at the departments of human resources and special education has sparked concerns among voters regarding the district’s priorities. While the district asserts that this reshuffling is aimed at recruiting employees who best fit the roles specified in the updated job descriptions and meet the needs of students and staff, some fear that the process could consume valuable resources that could be better directed toward students.
At the core of this issue is the $45,000 payment that the district has agreed to pay the San Diego County Office of Education to conduct an executive recruitment and employment search for these positions. While it is critical to ensure that the district has capable and qualified individuals in leadership positions, it is equally important to recognize that every dollar spent on this search is a dollar that is not being used to benefit students directly.
As the search progresses through the end of July, the district will be vacating several significant positions, including all six of its area superintendents and leadership roles in the human resources and special education departments. Those who are vacating their positions will be encouraged to reapply, and everyone interested in these positions, including current employees, will have an opportunity to do so.
While this may appear to be a sound approach to finding the right candidates for these important roles, it is essential to remember that this process comes at a cost. As the district grapples with budgetary constraints and challenges with low-income area schools, it is imperative that every dollar be spent wisely and with the utmost consideration for the needs of students.
The district’s decision to vacate these positions and conduct an executive search may have good intentions, it is essential that voters remain vigilant and hold the district accountable for ensuring that every resource is used in the best interests of students. It is critical to recognize that the district’s leadership must prioritize the needs of students over all other concerns, and that includes using resources judiciously to ensure that every student has access to the education they deserve.
