Gun Reported Today, RBV High School

This was originally published in an email from Vista Councilman John Franklin on Monday

I’m writing to you under sad circumstances this evening.

Today a Rancho Buena Vista High School student reported a gun on campus. Every available Deputy in the City responded. Students’ safety was threatened. They lost an entire day of learning. Unfortunately the gun was never found.

On September 9th last year, after a previous violent incident involving students, I asked the Vista Unified School District Board of Directors to reinstate the school deputies program. The board still refuses to reimplement the school resource officer program, claiming insufficient funding despite the fact that they had a 76 million dollar surplus this year.

On October 14th last year, the school board hired almost 40 new non-teacher employees and 2 teachers. I even pledged to increase the City’s cost share, but still no action on behalf of the board.

Neglecting student safety is unacceptable. I’m asking you to reach out to your VUSD School board member and demand the return of school resource officers today.
