After two weeks of his absence, Governor Gavin Newson showed up to make two key points at the California Economic Summit. California’s cases for COVID are spiking, due to a winter surge, but more for vaccinated people than not vaccinated. And California’s economy is still dominating.
He was absent for a while after receiving a COVID booster shot on Oct. 27. Newsom explained that “family obligations” led him to cancel a planned trip to the United Nations climate change conference in Scotland. Newsom’s absence is out of character for him, as not only is he a career politician, but he is also one to never shy away from the camera.
Newsom said, “I was ready to go, and I had that dinner … with the family, and the kids literally, they kind of had an intervention, they said they couldn’t believe that I was going to miss Halloween. I woke up that next morning with something probably familiar to a lot of parents — that knot in your stomach — that I had no damn choice. I had to cancel that trip.”
While in Monterey, he pushed for Californians to go get vaccinated before the winter surge, while forgetting what the immunity system is and how it works.
“Last week, we literally were planning out our winter surge strategy, pre-positioning assets in anticipation of what’s going to happen in the next few weeks. … I don’t want to tell you that because I don’t want it to be true, but the data bears it out”, Newsom commented.
However, Newsom should watch out. A recent poll from the Public Policy Institute of California said 52% of Californians expect bad economic times in the next 12 months. 63% say that children will be worse off in the near future than where they are today.
Newsom’s disappearance is certainly not helping his image, even if he thinks he is in good shape after surviving a recall. Many voters could see his disappearance as a sign of weakness come 2022.
