Districts Are Being Redrawn, Public Hearing For District Two Is Set For Thursday (Aug. 26th)

The County of San Diego’s Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) is hosting pre-mapping public hearings to hear input from residents regarding the redrawing of County District lines. This hearing is both in-person and virtual.

Redistricting takes place every ten years following the federal census. District boundaries are redrawn based on new data and shifting populations. San Diego County’s IRC is entrusted with redrawing the five supervisorial districts to demonstrate equivalent populations, to the extent practical.

The IRC schedules pre-mapping hearings in the first phase of redistricting to grant San Diego residents the opportunity to express their concerns. Based on what residents have to share, the IRC can identify communities of interest and recognize populations with common social or economic objectives. These hearings give the IRC the ability to allocate these factors into a single district for effective and fair representation. Public input is a crucial component of the redistricting process because district lines configure a community’s ability to elect the representatives of its choice.

This Thursday, August 26, the Commission will hear from residents to better understand communities and ensure they are fairly represented when drawing district lines. It is highly encouraged for residents of District 2 to participate in their pre-mapping hearing.
