Republican Senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham announced on Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated. Graham said on his twitter, “I was just informed by the House physician I have tested positive for #COVID19 even after being vaccinated. I started having flu-like symptoms Saturday night and went to the doctor this morning.” Graham also thanked that he was vaccinated saying his symptoms could be much worse had he not, “I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now, my symptoms would be far worse.”

Graham was vaccinated back in December and has urged people to get vaccinated.

Prior to testing positive, Graham and several other lawmakers were on Sen. Joe Manchin’s houseboat. Manchin’s office released a statement saying, “Senator Manchin is fully vaccinated and following the CDC guidelines for those exposed to a COVID positive individual.” The party was reportedly outdoors and had no more than a dozen people in attendance.

Graham is what is being called a “breakthrough” case which means someone who is vaccinated but still gets the virus. Breakthrough cases have mild to no symptoms and are rare according to health officials.
