Mark Powell is no stranger to education. Powell has 25 years of hands-on education experience as a classroom teacher, vice-principal and dean of students. Powell was elected to the San Diego County Board of Education in June 2016 and served on the board for 4 years. Speaking on behalf of the board, PQE co-founder and Board Chair, Mitz Lee said, “We are fortunate to have someone of Mark Powell’s caliber and experience step up to lead PQE,” said Lee. “While we were able to successfully establish Term Limits for San Diego Unified School Board Members in 2018 and District only Elections in 2020 our work to assure accountability and transparency is far from over and our efforts will continue to bring quality education to California’s 2nd largest school district. We are at a critical moment in public education and the board believes that Mark Powell has the right communication and leadership skills needed to deliver PQE’s mission to transform and revitalize public education to insure that every child receives a quality education.”

Mark Powell said, “I am honored and excited to lead PQE. I believe quality education matters – it matters to San Diego, to California, and to the entire country, but most of all it matters to parents and students.”

Mark Powell also served on the San Diego County Commission on District Restructuring where he supported the Voters Right Act. As a former reserve police officer with the San Diego Police Department, Powell said that he is committed to keeping our schools safe and free from drugs and he will be working with stakeholders on an anti-opioid counterfeit pill campaign. Powell and PQE will also be providing input on the reopening of schools to make sure all stakeholders’ voices are heard.
