Last week, public health officials announced a temporary closure of the Petco Park vaccine superstation due to a shortage of Moderna doses. Unfortunately, the delayed shipment of vaccines has carried into this week due to poor planning of the Democrat majority County Supervisors as well as Governor Gavin Newsom.
According to the UC San Diego hospital, several hundred appointments for the vaccine, which were to happen from February 19th-22nd, were canceled and will be rescheduled. County public health officials state that they will be administering the vaccine as soon as the shipment arrives.
“We have the mechanism in place to be able to administer all the doses we get in San Diego County,” Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said Friday. “In the meantime, we’re asking San Diegans to be patient. As the delayed doses arrive, we will administer them to everyone who has an appointment and release new time slots.”
It is an established fact that good leadership skills are critical during a time of struggle. Unfortunately, California has proven that some of its important leaders are not up to the task of assisting their constituents.
Since the start of the pandemic, Governor Newsom has made life harder for millions of Californians. From unconventional lockdown measures to unemployment claim failures by the EDD, Newsom has proven that his performance as California Governor is worth every single signature on his recall campaign. As the vaccine approval provided a light at the end of the tunnel for worried California residents, Newsom completely botched the rollout despite having almost a year of advanced notice on the federal vaccine distribution program.
Local leadership has not proven to be any more helpful. The Democrat majority Board of Supervisors led by Sup. Nathan Fletcher has also had trouble in effectively leading San Diego County through the pandemic. Fletcher has provided no answer as to why the city is so far behind on reopening, nor has he been able to address his own failures for a horrendous vaccine distribution plan without blaming others. Poor leadership and lack of accountability are not characteristics that an elected official should show, especially during a period filled with uncertainty.
