2,400 boxes of food were distributed to families in need at Southwestern College. Although the event was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., many families arrived as early as 5.a.m.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a great deal of financial hardship for residents and business owners. Most business owners have been forced to close their doors and as a result members of their community lost their jobs.
To offer some form of relief for those most affected this year, the non-profit South Bay Community Services teamed up with Southwestern College, the Sweetwater Union High School District, and I Love to Glean to make the destruction possible.
Inside each box were fresh and non-perishable goods, given on a first-come, first-served basis. According to the organization, boxes contained “five to ten times” the amount of food given at other food distributions during weekdays.
South Bay Community Services hosts food distributions each week and says the number of families hoping to claim goods continues to grow each week as the pandemic goes on.
