Although the 2020 elections are still a year away, early endorsements have begun in the San Diego City Attorney’s race. State Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins has already endorsed San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott in her bid for re-election in 2020.
Atkin’s endorsement comes as no surprise. Elliot and Atkins have partnered before to help end the illegal ivory trade and expand Elliot’s gun violence restraining order initiative statewide. The initiative’s goal is to keep firearms away from those who pose a potential threat to their family and community. Additionally, Atkins respects Elliott’s continued advocacy of environmental protection and women’s rights.
Democratic attorney Cory Biggs withdrew from the San Diego Mayoral race and recently announced he would challenge incumbent Mara Elliott. Biggs, a California lawyer for over 25 years, has brought lawsuits against the San Diego Convention Center, the City of San Diego, San Diego Gas & Electric, Walmart, and many other high profile companies. If elected, Biggs pledges to run a “straight-up law office” free from political pursuits.
Both the Mayoral and City Attorney primary races already feature Democrats going head-to-head, indicating what will likely be a very contentious election cycle for local Democrats. The primary election is scheduled for March 3, 2020.
