Written by Julianne Foster

Brian Epperson is the Republican Party of San Diego County’s endorsed candidate for the San Marcos Unified School District Area B.

Brian received his bachelor’s degree in Integrated Social Sciences from the University of Washington in 1993. Since completing college, Brian’s resume has stacked up to be nothing short of impressive. He has been the CEO of Target River, a local marketing company that serves retail and non-profits, for almost five years. He was Vice President of DME Delivers for over two years before moving on to become Senior Account Executive for Major Accounts at Aspen Marketing Company. He spent the next seven years as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at SDAC. From 2014 to 2016, Brian was Senior Account Executive and then Vice President of Integrated Marketing for Sandy Alexander printing business.

Brian is a resident of the Rancho Tesoro community in San Marcos, and also owns a small business there with his wife and seven children. “Through my profession, I stay active in the business community with membership and involvement in six Chambers of Commerce,” said Epperson. “I am also the creator of The Great American Buy Local Day, a movement to support the nearly 31 million small businesses in our country.”

His involvement in education includes serving on an elementary school site council, a high school site council, a District Advisory Council, two District Career and Technical Education Advisory Councils, the San Marcos and Carlsbad Chambers’ of Commerce Education Committees, and serving as Former Board Committee Chair at MAAC Community Charter School. Brian has supported many school districts through staff recruitment and retention, revenue stabilization, increasing daily attendance, improving enrollment, and increasing community engagement.

Epperson has been active in community service through supporting many local organizations, including The San Marcos Promise, MAAC, East County Transitional Living Center (ECTLC), Support The Enlisted Project (STEP), and various Boys & Girls Clubs. He actively serves as a member of the Education Committee for the San Marcos Chamber. One organization he has supported, SOLE Effects, is focused on middle and high school level students, improving their confidence as leaders.

Brian is running for this position to help provide a safe environment for students, teachers, and families. “There are over 21,000 unique stories represented by the students of SMUSD,” Epperson added. “And I am running to support every one of those.”

He believes the board needs members with skills in technology use, social and emotional support, the ability to change schools to better prepare students for their future, and make better decisions regarding enrollment. An important issue Brian believes he can be resourceful in is revenue streams. Limitations and restrictions on revenue streams is needed along with a member who has the knowledge to help maximize the use of revenue.

Brian is endorsed by San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones, Warner Springs Unified School District Superintendent David MacLeod, Borrego Springs Unified School District Superintendent Mark Stevens, and many others. “Brian Epperson has both a local and global perspective on K-12 education,” said Cajon Valley Union School District Superintendent David Miyashiro. “He is recognized as a thought leader, innovator, and champion in the education space.”
