Candidate Profile: Joseph Lai for San Marcos Unified School District

Written by Nicholas Vetrisek

Joseph Lai is the Republican Party of San Diego County’s endorsed candidate for San Marcos Unified School District Area A. He is a businessman with over 19 years of experience in the mortgage industry.

During the course of his career, Joseph has managed hundreds of employees and had experience in executive management. He will translate these skills he learned in the private sector to helping students in the San Marcos Unified School District.

One of the main issues Lai wants to address is district spending. With the coronavirus and declining enrollment severely affecting revenue for the district, he wants to ensure that SMUSD can still afford to provide for its students while not raising taxes for the citizens of San Marcos. With his robust experience in business, he ensure that the district has financial accountability.

Another issue Lai is concerned about is school lunches. The current system has very few requirements as to the caloric content and overall healthiness of the food served, and this must change. Students should have access to healthy food at school and Lai will address this with the input of parents—as he will all other decisions.
