Written by Julianne Foster

Mike Blessing is up for re-election to the Oceanside Unified School District Area 5 and is endorsed by the Republican Party of San Diego County.

Mike began working in the City of Oceanside as a staff planner in 1976 until he was promoted to City Planning Director in 1985, and then appointed Deputy City Manager in 2000. After 33 years of servicing the public, he retired and chose to continue his involvement in the community and has been on the OUSD Board since. Mike currently serves as President of the OUSD Board, and his proudly supported by his colleagues. His wife, Sandi, has also given her time to the community through serving on the school board from 1992-1996. Together, they have raised their two sons and put them through district schools.

“I believe I am uniquely qualified to serve on the board based upon my 40 years of public policy and planning experience,” said Blessing. “I know the City and its residents and I understand that open and responsive institutions are prized in this City.”

Over the past 12 years, Mike has encouraged the board to work with teachers, parents, and students in their decision-making and plans to continue supporting their inclusion and participation.

When he is re-elected, Mike wants to bring a fresh perspective on how they can collaborate and successfully return students to schools as quickly and safely as possible. He wants to increase and expand parental involvement and promises to listen to public input prior to board decisions. Mike supports all efforts to keep qualified and motivated teachers in classrooms to give their students the best opportunity possible for a good education. He wants to contribute to find cost effective and timely solutions to needed changes in school facilities.

“And finally, if elected, I will maintain my commitment to provide music, art, sports, and vocational training opportunities so that well-rounded young adults graduate from our schools, college and career ready, and are prepared to take on the challenges of the world,” Blessing added.

Mike has been endorsed by Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss, Oceanside Deputy Mayor Jack Feller, Oceanside City Councilmen Ryan Keim and Christopher Rodriguez, OUSD Board Members Eleanor Evans, Raquel Alvarez, and Stacy Begin, the Oceanside Teachers Association, and many more.
