Recently, numerous local news publications have come out against Proposition 16, which, if passed, would end equal treatment by the government based on race and gender.
Prop 16 essentially nullifies Prop 209, an initiative passed back in 1996 that states, “The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.”
Prop 16 would bring back affirmative action, which will take opportunities away from qualified students and workers in order to benefit less qualified “underrepresented minorities.” The proposition is blatantly racist and discriminatory, but true equality is an ideal long abandoned by the radical Left.
The Southern California News Group (SCNG) publications stated regarding Prop 209 that “voters affirmed the principle that government should judge people on equal terms and not on the basis of immutable characteristics.” SCNG believes that the state should not be able to discriminate based on race or gender.

The list of publications opposing Prop 16 includes: Orange County Register, Los Angeles Daily News, Press-Enterprise, Long Beach Press-Telegram, Torrance Daily Breeze, Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Whittier Daily News, San Bernardino Sun, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, and Redlands Daily Facts.
San Diego News Desk is proud to stand with SCNG in opposing Prop 16 because it is blatantly racist and discriminatory. People should be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin or gender. Such policy should not be tolerated in today’s society and that is why Prop 16 must be thoroughly rejected by voters in November.
