On this date, 244 years ago, the greatest nation the world has ever seen declared its independence. A nation conceived in liberty and justice and endeavored in a constant struggle toward a more perfect union.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These words in the Declaration of Independence inspired what this nation could be, and embodies what we now are.
We are humbled and grateful for the sacrifices of those who founded this great nation—and to those who have bravely fought to preserve it. We are forever indebted to our ancestors for birthing a culture and a country that allows each individual to pursue their happiness. While the adversity we’ve faced as a country this year has presented unprecedented challenges, we continue to rise to the occasion and remain committed to the cause of our nation’s founding: freedom.
When the colonies were subjected to the tyranny of British rule, Americans stood and fought for freedom. When slavery robbed individuals of their God-given liberty and threatened the survival of our nation, Americans stood and fought for freedom. When the fate of mankind was at stake in the World Wars, Americans stood and fought for freedom. When populations around the world have struggled to escape persecution, Americans have stood and fought for freedom. Our history and our traditions have followed us, so our fight for freedom must also continue.
