San Diego has been pioneering California’s COVID-19 reopening effort from the beginning, proving exactly why we’re considered “America’s Finest City.” Earlier this week, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to seek state guidance on resuming several limited activities, including private planned events, wedding receptions, hotel conferences, street fairs, and team competitions.
During the public comment portion of the County Supervisors meeting, 76th Assembly District candidate Melanie Burkholder implored the board to continue advocating for the full reopening of San Diego schools in the fall.

“I have spoken with many parents and educators about the proposed time for reopening. The plans that are presented offer numerous problems,” said Burkholder. “We’ve entered the recovery phases for our state, and as a result, we must weigh the consequences of not opening our schools full time, and the long-term effects it will have on our children.”
Burkholder warns that the COVID-19 pandemic has already induced traumatic effects on San Diego’s children and that forcing children to learn in cold, sterile environments with so many stressors present around them may exacerbate such trauma.
Dual-working households, single-parent households, homes with special needs children, and homes with students who cannot learn well with existing distance learning models will be especially hurt by the continuation of mandatory distance learning as many school districts are planning.
“Now is not the time for more change in regard to our students,” concluded Burkholder. “Please reopen the schools full-time.”
