The summer heat is closing in upon us. A handful of “County Cool Zones” are opening to help San Diegans beat the heat. These air-conditioned locations are spread throughout the county, in some of our hottest areas, and are as follows:
- Borrego Springs Library
- Fallbrook Community Center
- Lakeside Community Center
- Potrero Branch Library
- Santa Ysabel Nature Center
- Spring Valley Community Center
- Valley Center Branch Library
Cool Zones will be open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. Libraries will be offering their sites for cooling off, but not for usual library services as the COVID-19 restrictions remain in place. Social distancing guidelines will also be in place to protect both attendees and staff. All visitors will have their temperature taken, and be required to wear face coverings.

For those who are unable to leave their home, lacking transportation, or those who choose to stay home to protect themselves against COVID-19, the county—in partnership with SDG&E—will be providing fans to San Diegans who are living on limited incomes. Residents must not have access to air-conditioned spaces to receive fans.
“We want to thank our SDG&E community partner for making this program available to give some relief from the heat to our more vulnerable residents,” said County Supervisor Jim Desmond.
SDG&E Communications Manager Jessica Packard emphasized the importance of the Cool Zones program to San Diego residents. “SDG&E appreciates and supports the County of San Diego for initiating the Cool Zones program back in 2001 and for making it such a success. The County’s leadership has benefitted our region for almost 20 years and SDG&E is proud to be a part of this program since its inception.”
