Sen. Patricia Bates Responds to Governor’s Announcements Regarding Partial Business Reopening and Orange County Beaches

SACRAMENTO – Governor Newsom announced today that some California retail businesses can reopen with some modifications by the end of this week. He also announced that Laguna Beach and San Clemente city-run beaches will be allowed to reopen to the public this week. Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the statement below in response:

“The Governor’s announcement about the partial reopening of our economy with some modifications to ensure public health is a step in the right direction. California is flattening the COVID-19 curve and we are building the infrastructure necessary to meet the key measures needed to eventually reopen the entire state.

“His announcement to reopen some of Orange County’s beaches in a safe manner is also another positive step. I am glad he is listening to the concerns that many OC residents and I have raised regarding his punitive action last week. The controversy of that action could have been avoided had he first reached out to local officials to get their input.

“Whether at a beach or at a supermarket, it is important for everyone to abide by physical distancing and other precautions. We can achieve healthier outcomes by encouraging cooperation rather than confrontation. Facts – and not fear – must continue to guide California’s reopening strategy.”
