If you’re interested in local politics but aren’t sure where to start, look no further for an opportunity to make a difference. San Diego County is looking for qualified citizens who are interested in serving on the City of San Diego’s Redistricting Commission.
According to the City Council’s website: “Redistricting is the process of redrawing the City Council district boundaries every 10 years following the Federal Decennial Census. The redrawing of district boundaries is designed to ensure that local legislatures are representative of the City’s population. How and where districts are drawn can shape a community’s ability to elect the representative of their choice. The districts are used for all elections of City Council members, including their recall, and for filling any vacancy in a City Council office.”
No experience in politics is necessary, but applicants must submit a 300-word statement regarding their qualifications. The city hopes to form a commission that is geographically, socially, and ethnically diverse, while being committed to impartial, nonpartisan leadership.
Registered San Diego voters interested in the Redistricting Commission need to submit the Redistricting Commission Application during the nomination period of May 1 – June 30. It’s extremely important for citizen representation on this board to ensure fair and impartial redrawing, so those hoping to make a difference shouldn’t hesitate to apply.
