San Diego State University has suspended all 14 fraternities associated with the Interfraternity Council (IFC). The announcement came Friday following the tragic death of a student.
According to a friend, Dylan Hernandez, 19, fell off his bunk bed on Wednesday night. The friend then went to his room and put him back in bed. When she went to check on him early Thursday morning, he was reportedly foaming at the mouth, with purple lips and yellowing skin. She administered CPR until medical assistance arrived.
“This is one of the worst things that happened to me in my life. It’s a wreck,” said Ethan Dzenis, a friend of Hernandez.
The university believes Dylan came from a fraternity event the night he fell off his bed; as a result, they have suspended the Interfraternity Council and the 14 houses associated with the IFC.
“Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council,” a statement from the university read.

The IFC includes the following fraternities:
Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Alpha Order, Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Theta Chi, and Zeta Beta Tau.
SDSU said that prior to this decision, 10 IFC affiliated organizations were under some type of elevated judicial status that included six affiliated organizations already under suspension.
The fate of fraternities at SDSU right now is unknown. The suspension is effective “until further notice,” while the university decides what steps it will take.
