Recently, the San Diego City Council Rules Committee voted unanimously to move forward with their plans to remove the power of mayors to nominate the independent auditor.
The current process is somewhat undefined, and this initiative seeks to leave the appointment of an auditor up to a City Council vote—and for a good reason. Such a role holds prestige. The independent auditor of San Diego oversees the city’s finances, making it a significant position relevant to all citizens of San Diego. As such, it’s a position that should be left up to a vote, not to one individual’s jurisdiction.
The spearhead of this initiative, Councilman Scott Sherman, has received support from across the political aisle. Even Councilwoman Barbara Bry, an ardent Democrat and mayoral candidate, has stated that she hopes to move forward with the process.
It’s a good sign that individuals across the political spectrum share the same fundamental belief in democracy and governmental accountability.
Sherman’s initiative is a fantastic step towards further government transparency. By moving forward, San Diego will showcase a piece of a bipartisan compromise that seeks to maintain the sovereignty of the people.
