The Aztecs were victorious once again last week, defeating New Mexico State by a score of 31-10. SDSU is now 3-0 on the year, showing, so far, that they’re better than most people anticipated.
SDSU dominated New Mexico State, despite struggles in the passing game. Aztecs’ quarterback Ryan Agnew completed 16 of 25 passes for just 106 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
However, the team’s sophomore running backs were more than capable of compensating for the passing struggles. Jordan Byrd ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Chance Bell added another 116 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushing attempts. In total, 291 of SDSU’s 397 total yards came on the ground, while 18 of their 24 first downs also came from the running game.
The Aztecs defense was brilliant as well, holding the Aggies to just 30 yards rushing. The defense also had six sacks—including two from defensive lineman Keshawn Banks—and two interceptions, one each from Luqman Barcoo and Kyahva Tezino.
Overall, the Aztecs have outscored their opponents 60-24 this season. The team is off to a hot start with three consecutive wins, but today’s game against Utah State will likely be their toughest yet.
The Aztecs are four point underdogs according to CBS, but a victory would give SDSU just its second 4-0 start in 38 years, with the other coming in 2017. There’s a lot on the line against Utah State this week, so the Aztecs must come ready to perform at their best.
