There are times when the City of San Diego can seem fragmented and divided. Given that it ranks among the largest and most significant of the cities in the United States, this should come as little surprise. It boasts a population well above one million people, and with such a great size, it is somewhat natural that sections can appear distant from one another.
With such a large number of people comes a vast and diverse variety of citizens from all sorts of backgrounds. Couple that with San Diego’s position as a border town, and you have what amounts to one of the world’s most magnificent cultural melting pots. Some contend that such a thing would be a recipe for strife and discontent. However, there are also those who hold that such a reality is a key to something greater.
Throughout his tenure, Mayor Kevin Faulconer has proven himself to be one of the few who firmly believes the latter. Outside of twice winning the support of San Diegans in elections, he has also shown this quality through the efforts of One San Diego—a nonprofit working to improve the San Diego community. While Mayor Faulconer is not directly affiliated with the organization, his history of participating in its many programs is clear evidence of his commitment to the group and its goals.
As for One San Diego itself, the success it has accomplished already is impressive. Through its many actions, such as its “We Have Your Back” program, which gives underprivileged children backpacks full of supplies, the organization has shown its willingness to support the city’s youth. Through this act, the youngest of San Diego citizens are given an equal chance for success in their future.
If all of this proves insufficient to the skeptical observer, it should also be noted that youth opportunity is just one of the organization’s three stated goals. The other two ideals are economic prosperity and thriving communities, both further establishing that One San Diego is bound to the idea of a better and more united city. Such practical actions have had a tangible impact on the lives of many, and these efforts will only continue.
For all of the great effects these programs have had though, it is also important to take a step back and appreciate the fantastic community present in our city, a place in which One San Diego has played no small part in cultivating to the benefit of us all. To that end, it has established an annual tradition called the Neighborhood Experience, an event which serves as a celebration of all aspects of the city.
Prior events have brought in virtually all members of San Diego’s vibrant community. In them, men and women in traditional Mexican outfits danced and played music alongside Chinese dragons. Ethnic food from a variety of sources was brought to be enjoyed by all in attendance. One could continue for hours with such examples, but suffice it to say that the Neighborhood Experience has brought the best the city has to offer.
For those who appreciate the cultural diversity and economic opportunity of San Diego, the Neighborhood Experience as well as the other contributions of One San Diego show just how instrumental the organization has been in maintaining San Diego’s role as America’s finest city.
