Mayor Bill Wells: “In just seven days, we’ve witnessed an overwhelming 5,000 migrant encounters, indicating a shift in migration from Texas to California.”

In just seven days, we’ve witnessed an overwhelming 5,000 migrant encounters, indicating a shift in migration from Texas to California.

California’s policies, offering free healthcare, in-state tuition, financial aid, and food assistance, alongside the decision by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors to provide free legal defense to immigrants, have undeniably fueled this surge in illegal immigration.

The consequences are dire – we now see more boats arriving on our shores and individuals brazenly exploiting vulnerabilities in our border infrastructure. This situation lays bare the inherent flaws in our immigration system, as underscored by the statistic that only 14% of asylum seekers qualified for asylum last year.

Over 85,000 migrants have been dropped in San Diego County in the past four months, overwhelming our community and further straining our resources. Our community is bearing the brunt of this crisis. San Diego taxpayers are now saddled with a monthly expenditure exceeding $1 million, and there is no end in sight. The strain on our resources is a direct result of this uncontrolled surge in illegal immigration.

I implore our community to unite in expressing our frustration and demand immediate action from state and federal authorities. It’s beyond time we advocate for comprehensive immigration reform that prioritizes security and safety
