MEDIA ADVISORY: North County Representatives to Speak Out Against County’s Free Needle and Drug Pipe Plan

North County Representatives to Speak Out Against County’s Free Needle and Drug Pipe Plan

WHAT:  The County of San Diego is pursuing a harm reduction program, including syringe services and safer smoking supplies, through the California Department of Public Health.

This program potentially includes sterile syringes, personal sharps disposal containers, condoms, and lube packets with instructions, and “safer smoking supplies” (including pipe covers, mouthpieces, foil sheets, clean glass stems, and bubblers).

WHEN: Monday, July 17th @ 8:30AM

WHERE:  Vista Civic Center (In Front of Building)

200 Civic Center Dr. Vista, CA 92084

WHO: San Diego County Supervisor, Jim Desmond

               Vista Mayor, John Franklin

                San Marcos Mayor, Rebecca Jones

                Escondido Mayor, Dane White

                Oceanside Deputy Mayor, Ryan Keim

WHY: In 2021, the Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to create a “Harm Reduction Program”. Part of that proposal included a Syringe Services Program, which gives free drug paraphernalia to San Diegans. Supervisor Desmond and the North County Mayors don’t believe enabling drug use will get people the help they need. The majority of people living on our streets are addicted to drugs and alcohol, and promoting drug use will only perpetuate the problem.
