SAN DIEGO COUNCIL ON LITERACY HOSTS COMIC BOOK-THEMED FINANCIAL LITERACY SUPERHEROES COMPETITION

SAN DIEGO – March 15, 2023 – To encourage healthy financial literacy habits among San Diego youth and families in an approachable and memorable way, the San Diego Council on Literacy is hosting its second annual Financial Literacy Superheroes Competition.

The competition invites local children, and their parents and guardians, to submit graphic art entries that are comic-book themed and include a financial literacy or money management message.

Comics speak to students in a way they understand and identify with offering a creative outlet to express their emotions. In fact, studies have found that students have better reading comprehension and recollection when reading graphic texts versus illustrated or traditional novels.

“Getting kids excited about financial literacy can be challenging, but it’s incredibly important to an individual’s long-term success, so we developed this competition with a fun focus on mediums that families love – comics and superheroes,” said, Jose Cruz, CEO of the San Diego Council on Literacy. “Through this artistic approach, we can spark family conversations on key critical money management skills, like the importance of saving or borrowing wisely.”

Awards and prizes will be presented to contestants who submit one full-page entry that excels in meeting the following criteria: presentation of a strong financial literacy message, original art concept and original superhero concept. Prize categories include:

  • $500 General Prizes (3)
  • Ages 4-6 (one child, one parent/guardian)
  • Ages 7-10 (one child, one parent/guardian)
  • Ages 11-17 (one child, one parent/guardian)
  • $500 Solo Entry (1), one teen, between the ages of 11-17
  • $1,000 Teen Team (1), two scholarships of $1,000 each for one team of two, between the ages 11-17

Online entries must be received no later than midnight on Friday, March 31, 2023. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park.

“The San Diego Council on Literacy is a nonprofit organization that is focusing on the needs of our community and developing creative solutions to make San Diego, and the lives of its residents, better,” said Doug Wright, chief financial officer of Mission Federal Credit Union and San Diego Council on Literacy board member. “The support for the competition’s second year has been overwhelmingly positive, and I think I can speak for all our fellow sponsors when I say that this is a wonderful illustration of what’s possible when we partner together for good.”

The 2023 competition is sponsored by Mission Fed Credit Union, North Island Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union, MyPoint Credit Union, Kaiser Permanente, Sycuan, Comic-Con Museum, San Diego Public Library, The San Diego Union-Tribune and Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Public Relations.
