El Cajon, CA – El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells today announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in California’s 51st Congressional District.
“I am excited to announce my candidacy for Congress,” said Wells. “I have spent my entire life serving this community, and I am eager to bring that same level of dedication and passion to Congress. The residents of the 51st Congressional District deserve a representative who will fight tirelessly to strengthen our economy and our national security and I am committed to being that representative.”
Wells, the Mayor of El Cajon since 2013, began his public service in 2004 as a Planning Commissioner, was elected to the City Council in 2008, and became Mayor in 2013. Since that time, he has been on the front lines of championing common-sense solutions to the challenges facing local and regional governments. As a mental health professional with thirty-year experience, Wells has become a nationally recognized expert on homelessness.
“I am running for Congress because I believe that our country needs bold, assertive leadership,” said Wells. “Urgent action is needed to address the catastrophe of homelessness and the untreated mentally ill, the systematic degradation of the American dream, violence on our streets, and the suicidal border policies of the Biden administration,” continued Wells. “I’ve observed our current congresswoman long enough to know that she is unwilling to act to protect our community,” Wells concluded.
The 51st Congressional District includes the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, and the City of San Diego communities of Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, San Carlos, the College Area, Allied Gardens, and many others.
Bill Wells grew up in the 51st District, attending elementary through college at schools in the district. His first job was at age 11, delivering newspapers for the San Diego Union-Tribune. On his 16th birthday, he began working at Jack in the Box and continued to work hard, through his years as a clinician in local Emergency Departments, as a hospital administrator, and to ownership of a healthcare company.
An accomplished musician, Bill Wells has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for causes like the East County Transitional Living Center and the Home of Guiding Hands through benefit concerts.
Bill and his wife, Bettie, have three children and 4 grandchildren.
The primary election for the 51st Congressional District will take place on March 5, 2024. The general election will be held on November 5, 2024.
