NATIONAL CITY – A new Navy ship repair and support center has opened at the South end of Naval Base San Diego.
Austal USA will run the 15-acre site dedicated to smaller and mid-size vessels and is currently employing 120 people, but the company hopes to expand that workforce to about 400. The company will also be adding a 531-foot floating dry dock for littoral combat ships and Coast Guard cutters.
The addition of the facility will help with the Navy’s new focus on the Pacific theater.
