NATIONAL CITY – A new Navy ship repair and support center has opened at the South end of Naval Base San Diego.

Austal USA will run the 15-acre site dedicated to smaller and mid-size vessels and is currently employing 120 people, but the company hopes to expand that workforce to about 400. The company will also be adding a 531-foot floating dry dock for littoral combat ships and Coast Guard cutters.

The addition of the facility will help with the Navy’s new focus on the Pacific theater. Two U.S. Navy Vessels Collide
