DEMOCRAT ENDORSED PRIMARY CANDIDATE

DAVE MYERS ENDORSES JOHN HEMMERLING FOR SHERIFF

“John Hemmerling showed me he is the change that’s needed.” – Dave Myers

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — On Wednesday, retired Sheriff’s Commander Dave Myers endorsed John Hemmerling for Sheriff and released the following statement:

“I have decided to fully and enthusiastically endorse John Hemmerling for Sheriff. Public safety is neither a left or right issue, a Democrat or Republican issue – it is a vital public service that requires individuals of the highest moral, ethical, and competency order to lead the brave women and men in law enforcement. We do not currently have that at the Sheriff’s Department. John has shown me that he is a true leader who will restore competence, confidence, and integrity to our Sheriff’s Department. I urge all of my supporters to vote for John Hemmerling for Sheriff.”

Dave Myers was the endorsed candidate of the San Diego County Democratic Party in the June 2022 primary, placing third with almost 19 percent of the vote. Dave served in law enforcement for 35 years, first as a Carlsbad police officer and then as a San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy. Protecting our communities and providing assistance to those in need is his passion. Before retiring in 2018, Dave served in almost every division within the Sheriff’s Department, from detentions (jails) to serving as a Commander responsible for patrol stations and their law enforcement operations.

John Hemmerling responded, “I have immense respect for the courage it took for Dave Myers to cross party lines and endorse my candidacy for Sheriff. Dave and I don’t agree on everything politically, but when it comes to restoring leadership, accountability and transparency in the Sheriff’s Department, we agree completely. Protecting public safety, ending the status quo, and stopping the senseless deaths in our jails are not partisan issues. I enthusiastically welcome Dave Myers’ endorsement.”

Hemmerling’s other major endorsements include Mayors Bill Wells (El Cajon), John Minto (Santee), and Richard Bailey (Coronado); former-San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer; retired-San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman; San Diego Councilmember Chris Cate; San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson; former-San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith; the San Diego Deputy City Attorneys Association; San Diego Asian Americans for Equality; the Latino Political Action Committee of San Diego; and the Republican Parties of California and San Diego County.
