San Diego Asian Americans for Equality (SDAAFE) strongly endorses John Hemmerling for San Diego County Sheriff. As Sheriff, Hemmerling will be tough on crime and a leader in criminal justice reform. He will restore confidence, competence and transparency in the department and institute needed reforms starting on day one.
“Due to the recent multiple Anti-Asian incidents, public safety and security have become the most pressing and imminent issues of concern for our Asian-American community,” stated Joan Chen, Ph.D, President of San Diego Asian Americans for Equality. “As Sheriff, John Hemmerling is committed to opening and maintaining a direct line of communication with the Asian American community as he strives to reduce violence and hate crimes in San Diego County. SDAAFE is proud to endorse Hemmerling for Sheriff.”
San Diegans deserve safety, honesty and transparency. Hemmerling will align the department’s priorities with the concerns of every community — providing direct communication and a direct channel to oversight boards and the public when visibility is paramount. When the people see that their sheriff is committed to transparency, trust and collaboration are sure to follow.
San Diego Asian Americans for Equality is a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Asian Americans to win equal opportunity and justice through active participation in civic and public affairs in San Diego County. For the past six years, Hemmerling has headed the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions in the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, prosecuting more than 18,000 misdemeanor criminal cases a year.
