LAUSD Continues Masking Despite Mandate Expiration

Last week, state officials announced that from March 12th, California will no longer require school children to wear masks. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said they will shift to mask recommendations but not mandates.

Right after the announcement, Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent Alberto Carvalho said that, “we respect the voices of all stakeholders, and as such, we will remain engaged with our labor partners, employees and families as we maintain and seek practices that are protective, responsive and in the best interest of our school communities.”

Students and their families have not been consulted about the mask mandates for students. The United Teachers of Los Angeles are insisting on keeping mask mandates, which means that it will be required for half a million kids.

Even though thousands of people are able to go to athletic events such as SuperBowl, concerts without mask on and students should struggle all day in classrooms wearing masks.

There is much evidence that shows that masks don’t work and don’t help with stopping any of the diseases, it’s only giving hard times for students to breathe. Brain is is not receiving the oxygen which may cause lots of health problems if you are having a hard time to breathe.

Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Marty Makary said, “covering a child’s face mutes these nonverbal forms of communication and can result in robotic and emotionless interactions, anxiety and depression. Seeing people speak is a building block of phonetic development. It is especially important for children with disabilities such as hearing impairment.”

A retired doctor and engineer, Scott Sturman, also spoke on this issue and said, “Masking children is likely worsening linguistic and emotional development, as masking nullifies the crucial contribution of facial expression. The inflicted damage could be irreparable. We humans are social creatures, who communicate through complex languages and facial gestures. Our personalities are ingrained in these unique expressions, which impart visual messages that words alone cannot convey.”

L.A. County is one of the counties which struggled the most in the time of the pandemic. Its Supervisors kept people locked in their houses, they killed thousands of businesses and they didn’t listen to people.
