One of the biggest events in post-COVID San Diego was the Garth Brooks concert last Saturday. The concert was the largest in Petco Park history with over 50,000 fans. With this concert and other events over the last year or so, many San Diegans are over COVID lockdown policies. Especially one politician who hurt San Diegans with his COVID policies.
County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and his wife, former Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, took a photo at the Garth Brooks concert. Fletcher has been responsible for lockdown policies that hurt San Diego businesses and kept many indoors when other cities and counties were opening up. Fletcher has been embroiled in controversy after controversy regarding his COVID policies and statements. In August 2021, Fletcher said that people were “too dumb” to do any COVID research. That same month, the county voted on his resolution to declare COVID misinformation a public health crisis. The resolution passed 3-2 on party lines and Fletcher was heavily criticized, with critics saying that it was an attempt to silence people who were speaking out at the Supervisor’s public meetings. In November of that same year, he violated the Brown Act over his motion to make COVID vaccinations mandatory for all county employees. Fletcher has also not been holding Supervisor meetings in person, rather opting for remote meetings. All of Fletcher’s controversies lead ReOpen San Diego leader Amy Reichert to challenge Fletcher for his seat in the upcoming 2022 election. Only now, with someone challenging him has Fletcher changed his tune, saying that COVID can no longer control our lives.
The state policy recommends that masks be worn by everyone regardless of vaccination status for indoor events. While Fletcher and Gonzalez were not indoors, they were at ground level in a packed audience. Fletcher and Gonzalez’s actions add to the many liberal California politicians who violate their policies. From Governor Gavin Newsom, L.A mayor Eric Garcetti, to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Liberal politicians continue to believe they are above the policies they push and set.
