Some of the experts say that soon $5 a gallon is going to be a norm.
Prices in California are the highest among all of the states. The US national average is currently $3.51 a gallon. We can see the huge difference, as an example state of Nevada, current price for gallon of gas is $3.76 for regular. While in California, it is $4.70 for regular. Both urban and rural areas are seeing high gas prices. The average in San Francisco county is $4.907, and it is $4.879 in neighboring county San Mateo. In rural Mono County in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the average price is $5.587 per gallon.
“California is the proxy for what will happen with the energy transition,” said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for Oil Price Information Service. “A number of refineries have closed permanently….Getting people away from fossil fuels might be the right thing to do, but it is not without pain.”
Gas prices keep rising and Kloza thinks that $5 a gallon could come to California faster if the invasion of Ukraine by Russia happens. Gas taxes for California and fees are about 68 cents a gallon, while the national average is 39 cents.
“Most states don’t have those [wholesale] fees. But it is a coming attraction to a number of blue states,” Kloza said. “If you want to move people away from fossil fuels, you have to start charging for carbon.”
