There was a time where universities were dedicated to the scholarship of a wide range of disciplines, but this is no longer an accurate portrayal of the vast majority of American universities.
Instead of being open-minded institutions which embrace the discussion of various political and social worldviews, universities have transformed into a leftist indoctrination program. San Diego State University is no exception, as demonstrated by Monica Casper, the university’s dean of the College of Arts and letters.
Casper has been under fire from many San Diego conservatives after her incredibly lazy and inaccurate critique of “the Right.” In her December 1st tweet which has since been deleted, Casper wrote, “Just so we’re clear on the Right’s agenda- racism good, abortion bad, money good, women bad, capitalism good, sustainability bad, stupidity good, science bad, power good, equality bad, white people good, nonwhite people bad. Stench, indeed.”
Despite this uncalled for attack by Casper, student conservatives at SDSU have united as a result of the tweet. A joint statement by the school’s College Republicans, SDSU’s Turning Point USA chapter, and Students for Life has been released in response to Casper, “Many members of our conservative-minded communities are pursuing their degrees within the College of Arts and Letters, of which Dr. Casper is Dean. If this is how she feels about conservative students, then her declared dedication to their success is marred by her highly partial and divisive statements pertaining to them, and therefore must be called into question.”
The statement also questioned the university’s adherence to their own promises of protecting “religious and political” diversity, as the anti-conservative tweet by Casper — a high level administrator — confirms what conservatives already understood: that students who lean right are met with hostility on campus.
Perhaps Casper’s words aren’t surprising considering SDSU’s prior anti-conservatism. The school’s 2018 course “Trump: Impeachment, Removal, or Conviction?” (a class solely concerned with the impeachment of former President Trump) is one memorable violation of upholding political diversity at SDSU.
The silver lining here is the willingness of conservative student’s to collaborate against the liberal consensus evident on SDSU’s campus. It will not be the last time conservatives fight for equality against university leftism.
