As the Olympic Games continue in Japan, the United States continues to dominate. The USA has won a total of 73 medals, including 24 gold, 28 silver, and 21 bronze, most combined medals, and second-most gold.
The USA basketball has advanced to the semi-finals of the medal stage after defeating Spain, facing Australia next. The US swim team won a total of 11 gold medals. On Sunday San Diego State Alumni Xander Schauffele won the gold for the US in golf.
This week the Olympics will be transitioning from swimming to cross country and track and field. On Thursday the women’s golf team heads into a competition to also try and win the gold.
With only a few days of competition left, the USA looks to catch China in the fight for gold.
One of the biggest wins for Team USA was defeating Mexico 1-0 in men’s soccer. A huge upset that was won in penalty kicks after regulation.
Other notable wins include Tamyra Mensah-Stock, who was the first U.S.-born black woman to win gold in freestyle wrestling, and 19-year-old Athing Mu won big in the women’s 800m being only the second woman to ever win gold in the event. She also broke the American record, finishing in just 1:55.21.
