Public health officials in San Diego County have reported 530 new COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, meanwhile, the infection rates are going back up due to the new Delta variant. The Delta variant has been responsible for nearly 80% of the new COVID cases.
On Monday, officials reported 439 new cases. On Saturday, there were 501 new cases, which marked the first time that San Diego has seen over 500 daily cases since February.
The new total in local COVID-19 cases rose to 288,224 but the death rate has stayed at 3,786.
During the U.S. Senate hearing on Tuesday, there was an exchange between Republican U.S. Senator Rand Paul who accused Dr. Fauci of lying about the origins of the virus, “If caught lying to Congress… the U.S. criminal code created a felony and a five year penalty” Paul said to Fauci.
Fauci responded with “Senator Paul, I have never lied before the Congress… (and) you do not know what you’re talking about”. This resulted in an uproar of accusing and pointing fingers.
While many are looking for the origin of the virus and how it all came to be, the threat of the new Delta variant also comes with the threat of a highly possible shutdown once again. We’ve seen it done by Newsom, who imposed Draconian measures. We are also already seeing counties such as Los Angeles reinstating the mask mandate for indoors, even if you are vaccinated.
However, Newsom is still facing the recall that is coming up in September in the week of the 16th. Any sort of government shutdown could damage his reputation even more due to the immense damage he has done to students, parents, and businesses in our Golden State.
