The ballot for California’s recall election is officially set as 41 candidates will be listed on the September 14th ballot. This recall will determine if Governor Gavin Newsom will keep his job or lose it. The California Secretary of State Shirley Weber released a notice to the 41 candidates who qualified for the ballot. The final day to file for the race was July 16th.
One notable name that was omitted from the ballot was conservative talk show host Larry Elder. Elder filed on July 12th, but the Secretary of State said that he had missing requirements and missing income tax returns which disqualified him from the ballot. Elder campaign spokesperson Ying Ma stated, “Our campaign submitted every document required by the Secretary of State and the Los Angeles County Registrar.” Elder is fighting to get his name back on the ballot.
The September election is the final stop on an almost year and a half long effort to recall Gavin Newsom, who has come under scrutiny for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was roundly criticized for dining at the French Laundry where he violated a number of his own policies.
The ballot includes many notable names primarily on the Republican side including former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, 2018 gubernatorial candidate John Cox, former Olympian and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner, and Assemblymember Kevin Kiley. Only seven of the 41 candidates are Democrats and none are elected officials.
