The Biden Administration is currently housing tens of thousands of children seeking asylum. The children are being housed through 200 separate facilities in 24 states, which include five shelters for over 1,000 children to be crammed into.
Data collected by The Associated Press showed that the amount of migrant children living in government facilities has more than doubled in just the last two months.
Luz Lopez, attorney of the Southern Poverty Law Center, stated “we are back to a point almost where we started, where the government is using taxpayer money to build large holding facilities … for children instead of using that money to find ways to more quickly reunite children with their sponsors.”
What is interesting here is that many of the practices former president Donald Trump’s administration was criticized for using in these detention centers are the very same ones that are utilized under the Biden administration. Including not subjecting caregivers to FBI fingerprint background checks. Court records also show the Biden Administration aims to settle multiple multimillion-dollar lawsuits claiming that these migrant children were abused in the detention facilities under the Trump administration.
Officials from the administration also stated that the rising number of migrant children has prompted them to increase the number of available beds. They also admitted to this not being an ideal situation but stated that sheltering children in vast facilities is a safer alternative to keeping them for lengthy periods of time at Border Patrol stations.
The crisis at the border caused by the Biden Administration has led to an influx of children in our detention facilities and a myriad of further responsibilities for our country and tax dollars to deal with. The Trump administration had illegal immigration rates at an all-time low but was still heavily criticized. Yet today the situation under the Biden administration is far worse but we hear nothing but silence from the mainstream media on the issue.
