79th Assembly District special election kicks off

Written by Justin Culetu

The special election for San Diego’s 79th Assembly District will begin this week to fill the seat formerly held by Democrat Shirley Weber, who was appointed as California’s secretary of state by Governor Newsom.

Controversial early voting has already started, with ballots being mailed to every active voter, regardless of whether they requested one or not.

The primary elections are expected to take place on April 6th. A runoff election will take place on June 8th between the top two candidates if no one achieves a majority in the April 6th election.

The 79th Assembly District represents southeastern San Diego, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, plus parts of Chula Vista, Bonita, and National City.

Five candidates are currently looking to fill the seat, with four of them being registered Democrats and one being a Republican.

The four Democrats include Aeiramique Glass-Blake, Leticia Munguia, Shane Parmely, and Dr. Akilah Weber, who is Dr. Shirley Weber’s daughter.

The lone Republican candidate, Marco Contreras, received an endorsement from the Republican Party of San Diego County last month. Contreras, born in San Diego but raised in Tijuana, has lived the American Dream and currently owns Rancho Customs Brokers, which provides customs compliance and consulting services.

He has stressed that he wants to bridge the political divide we see today and preserve the American Dream for generations to come.

“I’m running because I believe our community needs a new and effective approach to leadership. I want to be a voice in our government that stands for providing safety to our cities, a voice that stands for a financially sound approach to government, and a voice that stands for preserving the future and potential of our children by putting education first. I’m running to serve our community by fighting to protect our rights and freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. I’m running because I believe there is greatness on the inside of every human being and it is the job of every elected official to vote for policies that will help each person fulfill their own American Dream. I’m ready to fight for a better San Diego and a better California.”- Marco Contreras
