Governor Gavin Newsom has failed to orchestrate an efficient vaccine distribution plan for the state of California. While states like Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and more are reopening, California has only fully vaccinated roughly 7% of residents, according to NPR. A lifeline for Newsom may be on the way, however.
The new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the FDA for emergency use and many people, including health care professionals, believe this vaccine is a new hope. The new vaccine requires only one dose, whereas the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require two doses with an approximately 30-day wait between the first and second dose.
While the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has lower effectiveness than the other two COVID-19 vaccines, it has still proven to reduce the severity of the symptoms. Additionally, the J&J vaccine can be stored in a conventional refrigeration system, which cannot be said for the other vaccines. Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines require freezing and essential protection from light.
Naturally, a one-dose vaccine that is easy to store will help to remedy a lot of the problems that Newsom has been unable to resolve.
