City of Santee calls for Sup. Fletcher to Resign as Board Chair

Written by Amanda Angulo

The Santee City Council sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors condemning Nathan Fletcher for his hateful language regarding those who support the Recall Gavin Newsom movement.

Fletcher used words like “Extremists,” “Conspiracy Theorists,” “Neo-Nazis,” “Right Wing Militia Groups,” and “White Supremacists,” to describe those participating in the effort. This despite the fact that millions of everyday Californians have signed the Recall Gavin Newson petition, including hundreds of thousands of democrats.

He made the comments during a conference call to Democratic Party supporters in California. Fletcher even went so far as to state that the extremist group that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 is part of the recall effort in a desperate attempt to discredit the effort.

Fletcher neglected to mention the thousands of peaceful protestors who did not attempt to enter the capitol but instead focused on the small, extremist group of individuals who have been condemned by all sides of the political spectrum. Fletcher is no stranger to breaking the law in support of his causes. He and his wife, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales, were arrested in 2019 during a protest on Labor Day.

“Hateful rhetoric has no room in political discourse and is particularly bad when it comes from the Chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors,” Santee Mayor John W. Minto wrote in the letter to the Supervisor.

The letter called for Fletcher to publicly apologize for the abhorrent statements he made and to resign from his position as Chair of the Board of Supervisors. The full letter can be seen below.

Fletcher quickly sent a letter in response, in which he refers to Santee’s letter as a “dishonest political stunt”, this coming from the author of the despicable statements made on the phone call. Throughout Fletcher’s response letter, there was no sign of remorse or apology.

Nathan Fletcher is clearly on team Gov. Newsom. He serves as a member of the Governor’s Council of Regional Homeless Advisors and was appointed by Newsom to the Air Resources Board in 2019.

If the Gavin Newsom Recall is successful, Fletcher risks losing those coveted positions, which would explain why he is putting up such a strong defense of Newsom.
