Encinitas Councilwoman Jody Hubbard resigns, battling advanced cancer

Encinitas Councilwoman Jody Hubbard, 64,  announced her resignation “effective immediately” on Wednesday. Hubbard represented the Cardiff region for the past two years.

The reason for her resignation is the unfortunate news that her lung cancer has spread and is now in the advanced stages. Hubbard said she was diagnosed with non-smoker, non-small cell adenocarcinoma following an emergency room visit last summer. She had initially been responding well to chemotherapy treatment and planned to stay on the council, but recently her status changed and she had to change her plan.

“Well, the lung cancer decided to spread and now I have brain cancer too,” she said, adding that she no longer has the energy levels to “fight cancer and fight for the city, too.”

Ms. Hubbard said she was resigning with “a heavy heart” but was happy with what she had accomplished after serving for two years.

“It’s been my great honor to represent the city of Encinitas in this elected role.”
