Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) recently indicated through Assembly Joint Resolution 7 that California would be supporting the Green New Deal, which was shut down a few months ago in Congress. The Green New Deal, first proposed by Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in partnership with Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), has the intention of entirely reshaping the economy to address the issues of climate and economic inequality.
By supporting the environmental and economic policies of the Green New Deal, Gloria believes it will benefit communities and motivate leaders in Washington to follow suit and implement similar policies. Furthermore, he believes that climate change is a salient issue facing not just California or the United States, but the entire world.
By supporting the Green New Deal and creating the resolution, Assemblyman Gloria believes this will be a credible solution for addressing climate change and economic issues. However, the Green New Deal has countless problems that Democrats fail or refuse to see. The immense costs, the economic ramifications, the ineffectual mitigation of climate change, the massive reduction of energy production, and many other issues make the proposal unrealistic and deeply concerning. By introducing the resolution, California will be supporting a piece of legislation that would result in far more harm than good.
Assemblyman Todd Gloria’s resolution was introduced to the Natural Resources Committee and subsequently approved in a 6-2 vote. Although California has always been a strong advocate for environmentalism, the resolution is the state’s first public support for the Green New Deal.
