Candidate Profile: John Minto for Mayor of Santee

Written by Nicholas Vetrisek

John Minto is the Republican Party of San Diego County’s endorsed candidate for Mayor of Santee. He is the incumbent candidate, and if re-elected, will continue to admirably serve the City of Santee like he has for years.

Minto served San Diego as a police officer for nearly 30 years and was the director of the San Diego Police Officers Association. In addition to his work with law enforcement, he also served on the Santee City Council before being elected mayor in 2016.

John has also been an active member of the League of California Cities, Heartland Communications, the East County Economic Development Council, Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), and Santee’s Community Oriented Policing Committee. He participates in the annual Santee Firefighter’s and Sheriff’s Pancake Breakfast, American Cancer Society’s Relay 4Life, Santee Chamber of Commerce, Miss Santee and Miss Teen Santee Pageants, Santee Street Fair, Santee’s Christmas Tree Lighting, the Summer Concert Series, and the Santee Salutes Independence Day celebration. He also supports Santee Santas, Santee Food Bank, SMOAC’s Backpacks for Kids’ program, San Diego River Park Foundation, Santee tree planting, and the Santee Historical Society.

“I hope my resume speaks to a lifetime of dedication to public service,” said Minto. “My wish is that I can continue to dedicate myself to Santee as your mayor.”

Among John’s numerous accomplishments as mayor are bringing Sportsplex USA to Santee, establishing the Highway 52 Coalition, and creating legislation that bans panhandling in the City of Santee. He is also the only mayor in all of San Diego County to send a letter to the sheriff supporting the issuing of concealed carry permits, showing his adamant support of our Second Amendment rights.

In addition to these major accomplishments, Minto also has many more plans for the Santee community. He plans to widen Highway 52 to reduce traffic, encourage the city’s transition to solar power, expand public safety funding and procedures, and numerous other important policies.

“I was out during the social unrest seeing for myself, listening to all sides, and supporting the peaceful rallying. I continue to believe there is always room for improvement, and listening is learning,” Minto explained. “I initiated having the city council approve four additional positions on the Community Oriented Policing Committee (COMPOC) to specifically address social issues.”

Through Mayor Minto’s policies, the City of Santee has been greatly improved over the last four years. The progress under his leadership is sure to continue during his next term, improving the lives and opportunities available to all residents, while ensuring that “future generations growing up and living in Santee enjoy the same or enhanced benefits of current residents.”

“My time with the city council has garnered extensive skills and knowledge necessary to lead our city into the future. I have seen Santee evolve into the wonderful city it is today,” said Minto. “Unfortunately, COVID-19 and social unrest have left a mark. Santee, now more than ever, needs my experience, leadership, and dedication to steer us into our next chapter.”
