Candidate Profile: Leslie Schneider for San Dieguito Union High School District

Leslie Schneider is running for the San Dieguito High School Board District 2 as the officially endorsed candidate of the Republican Party of San Diego County. Leslie is a native to Solana Beach and graduated from Torrey Pines high School. After college, she and her husband settled in Encinitas to raise their family and begin their careers.

Leslie is invested in her community and is especially passionate about our schools. She and her husband have two children enrolled in the San Dieguito Union High School District, and she is the only candidate in her race with kids enrolled in district schools.

Schneider is also an experienced school board member as she currently sits on the board for Encinitas Union School District, which has 5,400 students and a $64 million budget. By contrast, her opponent is endorsed and financially backed by the teachers’ union, which insists on omitting parents from the educational process.

In July, San Diego County schools were ordered to close by Gov. Newsom. However, on September 1, local schools were finally permitted to bring students back on campus for in-person learning. Despite thousands of requests from parents and students alike since then, the superintendent and teachers’ union-backed school board members have refused to allow schools to reopen. Instead, San Dieguito Union’s 13,000 students remain at home, forced to continue taking courses online rather than in the classroom.

Almost all campus sports and extracurriculars have been cancelled indefinitely and parents worry about the substantial learning loss and social emotional deprivation that students are experiencing. Pediatricians and mental health experts are reporting increased incidences of youth depression, anxiety, and suicides from the social isolation. Recently, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephen reported that online predatory activity of pedophiles has increased due to kids spending more time online, which makes them more vulnerable.

If elected, Schneider’s first priority will be to reopen schools for safe in-person learning for all students. She has substantial support and endorsement from the parents in her community, who desperately want this to happen. Leslie pledges to continue her dedication to transparency in decision making, fiscal responsibility and academic excellence. These are the hallmarks of a great school district—and is what the San Dieguito community deserves.
