Today, at 5:30 p.m., parents and children throughout the city will be rallying outside Carlsbad Unified School District headquarters at 6225 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 92009. There are almost 300 people who have signed on for the rally.
Parents are upset at the district’s lack of initiative to fully re-open schools, and want to hear from the Carlsbad Unified School District Board of Trustees as to why Carlsbad schools—especially elementary schools—cannot fully resume in-person classes.
Many have offered constructive solutions such as splitting which days or times of days students come to school so that social distancing can be maintained. Other have suggested having schools open a few days of the week and supplementing with remote learning. However, district officials seem utterly disinterested in any solutions and are simply ignoring the legitimate concerns of parents at this point.
This has been a hot button issue on social media and community forums—and parents want answers. School districts in Poway and Del Mar are already rolling out full re-opening phases, yet we have not heard from Carlsbad leadership about a plan to reopen as the education of local children suffers, in additional to their mental health and well-being. There will be numerous Carlsbad parents in attendance who have had enough and are willing to speak out.
One of these parents is Haley DiDonato, who is the lead organizer of the event and a real estate professional. Other speakers include State Assembly candidate Melanie Burkholder, civil litigation attorney and small business owner Arie Spangler, Travis Spangler, Danielle Morales, Adrienne Stokols, Michal Strawbridge, and many more.
