Laura Lothian is the Republican Party of San Diego County’s endorsed candidate for La Mesa City Council. She is a successful realtor and businesswoman that wants to use her leadership ability to help the La Mesa community.
“The current balance of our City Council is three attorneys, a medical doctor and a teacher,” said Lothian. “And I think if you had a private sector business voice on the City Council, you’d have better balance.” By having a unique voice that represents their interests on the Council, local business owners will finally have many of their concerns understood and addressed.
As the voice for businesses on the La Mesa City Council, one of the main issues she hopes to advance is removing bureaucratic red tape. She believes that there is far too much regulation and government interference in private businesses. She is going to work with business by trying to help them as opposed to merely getting in the way.
“The other problem is all the businesses and the permits and the licenses and the regulations and the inspections,” she added. “I’m going to be more about what we can do to make it easier for you to open your doors and keep your doors open, instead of being constantly an obstacle.”
Another issue she is concerned about is the massive budget shortfall resulting from COVID-19. She wants to have more responsible spending and focus simply on the essentials—rather than maintaining the wasteful spending that has gone unabated for years.
“I know that every person in this country gets hit with budget shortfalls in their lives – money dries up. And what you do is say, ‘OK, gotta say goodbye to cable.’ And all the things that are nonessential or luxury have to be back-burners,” Lothian explained. “The focus to me has to be safety, security, infrastructure. And everything outside of that has to be on a priority basis.”
Lothian is also a proud supporter of law enforcement, and commends the efforts of the La Mesa Police Department in keeping the community safe during recent riots.
“The LMPD do a great job of protecting La Mesans and their properties. They deserve community-wide gratitude for their heroic work during the May 30th riots,” she noted. “Hundreds, if not thousands, of troublemakers arrived en masse and destroyed multiple storefronts, burned several buildings to the ground and looted numerous businesses. Without the heroic efforts of the police, the damage would have been far worse.”
If elected to the La Mesa City Council, Laura Lothian will fight to cut regulations, ensure sensible government spending, stand with our law enforcement, and give small business owners a true voice in government.
